Opened in 1934, Healesville claims to be the world's largest collection of Australian wildlife and there are certainly plenty of animals scattered around the pleasant bushlands, plus a nocturnal house for the creatures you wouldn't otherwise see. In total there are more than 200 species of native birds, mammals and reptiles on daily display, plus once in a while they run special events at dusk to help promote the centre.

Healesville is not just worth visiting for the animals - the surroundings are themselves worth seeing. The ever present eucalyptus trees are mingled with peppermint scented gum trees and wattle trees laden with flowers. Ferns surround the streams (creeks in Oz terminology) which run calmly through the grounds.
