In July 2007 we braved the rain of an awful British summer (the wettest in thirty years) and headed down to south west England, destination Cornwall. After a few long haul holidays I wanted Sarah to see a bit of my home country, particularly the more scenic locations compared to London. Our first stop was the port of Looe on the south coast, followed by the picturesque Polperro.
After a lovely evening in Polperro, we drove inland to Pelynt to track down some family history, and from there onto Golitha falls. This enchanting walk through woods tracks alongside the river Golitha, with several photogenic drops of water. After a lovely walk for a couple of hours, we drove on towards the north coast and a quick stop in Padstow. The next day took us further south along the coast and past the fantastic Bedruthan Steps (England's own Twelve Apostles!).
Having arrived in Newquay during the Boardmasters surf competition we were sorely tempted to stay but we dragged ourselves away and headed down to St Ives. Every place we visited in Cornwall seemed to be better than the last, but for precisely this reason we kept waiting for somewhere to dissappoint. It wasn't St Ives! This fantastic fishing village is truly the gem of Cornwall with twisting cobbled streets, harbourside restaurants and fine sandy beaches accomodating both surfers and families. Most summers you'd be lucky to book accomodation anywhere in St Ives but the constant rain this summer had reduced visitor numbers and we were able to breeze into town and find a B&B with views over the sea from our window. Fantastic!
